Message from Governor Ted Kulongoski
Childhood hunger doesn’t take a vacation. Luckily, Summer Food Programs throughout Oregon are gearing up to feed kids this summer break. Although organizations are reimbursed for meal and administrative costs, they are feeling the pinch, like all of us, from soaring food and fuel costs.
Therefore I challenge the citizens and organizations of Oregon to help keep these important nutritional resources available to families struggling to put food on the table. As individuals or groups, please volunteer at least 4 hours of your summer at a nearby lunch site feeding or playing with the children.
The business community is in a unique position to help. There are nearly 600 feeding sites in communities across Oregon. Businesses can “adopt” their local lunch program and choose to help financially or encourage employees to volunteer during lunch break to serve meals. A thousand dollars or a week of help will make sure students return to school well nourished and ready to learn.
Working together, we can ensure no child in Oregon goes hungry this summer.
